Humanity: Age of Aquarius: The New Age

Point of the Vernal Equinox (0 Degrees of Aries) moves a minute fraction backward in relation to the constellations which form the background of the Circle of the Zodiac. In the West, the majority of Astrologers use the Tropical Zodiac which is founded upon the fixed Point of the Vernal Equinox, the first calendric day of Spring, which is always regarded as being and beginning at 0 Degrees of Aries regardless of the alignment with the background of the Zodiacal Constellations. In the East, the majority of the Astrologers use the Sidereal Zodiac which is directly aligned with and reckoned by the background of the Zodiacal Constellations. This gradual backward movement of the Wheel or Circle of the Zodiac is called the Precession of the Equinoxes. This regression moves at a rate of around 2,160 years per Sign, hence the duration of each Astrological Age. In Astrology, Aries is the first Sign and Pisces is the twelfth and last. Yet since the Astrological Ages progress in a backward motion, we are not moving from the Age of Pisces into the Age of Aries but we are moving into the eleventh and previous Sign of Aquarius. We are entering into the domain of the Age of Aquarius which shall last for over two thousand years.

Because Aquarius is the previous Sign it embodies many of the qualities which lead into Pisces. Just as Pisces is the Sign of the Collective Unconscious, Aquarius is the Sign of the Collective Consciousness. The Sign previous to Aquarius is Capricorn, also “ruled” over by Saturn. It is the Sign of Power, Government and the Establishment, of Authority. Because Aquarius follows Capricorn and because Aquarius shares the influence of Saturn with its previous Sign, Aquarius embodies these same attributes but it takes them a large step further. This is due to the progression of life’s energy through the Signs, but also it is due to in no small measure the “co-rulership” of Saturn and Uranus within the Sign of Aquarius. If Saturn stands for authority, the Establishment and the status quo, Uranus stands for independence, individuality and social reform. And so on, and so on, hence the duality of the Sign of Aquarius. In Aquarius, these two Planets are a constant challenge to one another.

Aquarius is the quintessential Sign of Humanity. It is the third and final Air Sign and the Air Signs are considered by many Astrologists as the most socially orientated of all of the Signs. Aquarius combines the pragmatism of Saturn and the idealism of Uranus in a way which no other Sign can. Being the final Air Sign, Aquarius is, in general, focused more on society as a Collective than on the individual or on one-to-one relationships such as the other Air Signs, Gemini and Libra, respectively. Again, Aquarius is the Sign of Humanity, of the Social Condition and of the Collective Consciousness. It is the Sign of Freedom, Philanthropy and Universal Brotherhood. Aquarius’ energy is much less subtle and much more direct than Pisces’. Also, as an Air Sign, Aquarius’ approach is much more mental, as opposed to Pisces, a Water Sign, whose approach is emotionally orientated. However, in many ways the positive aspects of these two adjacent Signs do much to complement each other.

These are the times we presently find ourselves living in, poised upon the brink between the Age of Faith and Religion and the Age of Science and Reason. Yet by no means should we make the mistake of taking the Age of Aquarius to be a cold and unfeeling energy just because it is the final and Collective Air Sign and it is “co-ruled” by stern and sometimes demanding Saturn. Although Aquarius is at heart an intellectual Sign, also at its heart is the promotion and upholding of social mores, morals, values and principles essential to a strong, healthy and prosperous society. With the influence of the Planet Uranus, even though Aquarius is essentially a Sign of the masses, the worth of the individual is not lost in the shuffle. Quite the contrary, originality, independence, freedom, rebellion, non-conformity, individuality, eccentricity and unconventionality are all within the realm of Uranus. There is potential for both the individual and society en masse to shine within the coming Age of Aquarius.

We are at the cusp of the Age of Faith and the Age of Reason. The keywords of Pisces are “I BELIEVE” and “I SACRIFICE” and the keywords of Aquarius are “I KNOW” and “I SHARE”. Perhaps we are as a Collective being tested as in regard to our faith in our innate divinity. Perhaps if we successfully navigate our way through this transition between the Age of Pisces fully into the Age of Aquarius we shall move beyond faith and come fully into the knowledge of our spiritual legacy. We shall move from “I BELIEVE” into “I KNOW”.

Aquarius is the Sign of Universal Brotherhood and after the divisiveness of the latter half of the Age of Pisces this could prove to be a very welcome energy indeed. We need only to embrace and to promote the positive aspects and energies of Aquarius to usher in a New Age of Hope. The Human Race is indeed One and a part of yet still a Greater Whole. All of Creation was meant to move toward ultimate harmony and Humanity is no exception. It is time to let go of the Old Age and to make way for the New. Our future and our Destiny, individually and collectively, for our generation and for posterity, are in our own hands.
